…A color photo series by Einat Arif-Galanti makes fun of the 16th – and 17th century genre of Netherlandish and Italian Vanitas paintings where still life of certain objects like a snuffed out candle, a skull or rip fruit became allegories for the brevity of life and the transience of earthly pleasures. In Galanti’s ingeniously updated groupings she introduces subversive details such as decayed food or flies feeding on fruit. Or, as in one instance, she replaces the dead pheasant traditionally included in Vanitas paintings with a toy rabbit hung upside down. |
